Give It A Name( No Literally)

These bands need a collective umbrella

Because calling it  emo is extremely misleading and prog is just a lie as these bands are far more progressive than any of the actual progressive rock bands.

There are alot of these bands like coheed and cambria, protest the hero, fall of troy, between the buried and me all obviously influenced by Mars volta but they don’t have a tag, or even a popularly used name (in other words a genre) so how can i search for these types of progressive post-hardcore bands when they don’t have an umbrella i know it’s a bit weird that i should say this but if djent can lump so many absurdly different bands together then why can’t there be a word for these bands.

I know i’m making a contradiction in terms for me who is constantly preaching the evils of H.M.V. and the like  racking avril lavigne next to Arch Enemy and all that stuff but this isn’t for the fat cats it’s simply to help me and other like-minded fans to find more bands that we might enjoy.

I don’t think the name should be a reference to the progressive side of the genre well not a direct reference maybe a metaphorical i only say this because post-hardcore has always been quite a progressive/ experimental since minor threat first gave birth to it.

I put it to you that we should all put our heads together to think of a word for it…

Djent

Beware the beast for it is Djent

For years now a creature has been brimming under surface waiting for it’s waiting for it’s season. Now it’s time has come and Like an eruption this new animal has come to raise all which was which was once metal, to the ground. It has managed to twist metal in such a way as to make it grotesque to the point of beauty.

The creature of which I speak is the Djent movement. And like disciples of the Djent religion created by Meshuggah they have been very faithful in treading the (meticulously) well-worn foot steps of this highly revered band. Never has any group of followers been so disciplined and innovative yet precise in their delivery of a portrayal of their heroes.

First point of reference:Gods Of Rapture By Meshuggah!

The “Djent” sound is more about the guitar-playing than anything else, the way that Fredrik Thordendal played has gone onto to inspire millions, however only a few of these have ever gone on to graduate into the Djent fraternity.

A few of these Djent bands are:

Metal news is good news

Iron Maiden At The Grammys

On Sunday 13th February Iron maiden received a Grammy for the best
metal performance for their song “El Dorado” from their album The
Final Frontier.

I think it’s fair to say that this was one of their most successful releases
after going straight to the top spot in 30 countries including: The UK, Germany, Japan, Spain, Sweden, and even Saudi Arabia.

They are also planning to circumnavigate the globe, on a 50,000 mile trip
using their customised 747(“Ed Force One”) they commenced the Final
frontier World Tour in Moscow on Friday 11th February 2011,and they arrive in the UK on the Wednesday 20th July 2011

Alice Cooper Becomes immortal

Alice Cooper had a notable accessory draped over his shoulders as he accepted his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday night.
The shock rocker — who was one of eight musicians, label heads and recording pioneers welcomed into the exclusive Hall at Manhattan’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel — was dressed in what looked to be a blood-spattered white button-down shirt and had his trademark live boa constrictor hung over his shoulders.

“We’ve always been a hard-rock band,” Cooper explained about his group, the Associated Press reported. “We just wanted to decorate it a little differently.”

The singer’s fellow inductees weren’t quite as adventurous with their fashion.
New Orleans piano maestro Dr. John, pop icon Neil Diamond, quirky singer/songwriter Tom Waits and girl-group-era star Darlene Love were the other performers honored on Monday night.
Dr. John, who was inducted by John Legend, said he felt “like I’m blessed to be singing, to be breathing.” The two men met back at a benefit for Hurricane Katrina relief, and Legend praised Dr. John for being a leading worldwide voice for New Orleans and its rich, diverse music scene.

“He has never stopped flying the flag of funk,” Legend said. “Tonight, he is definitely in the right place at the right time.”
Love — who was one of producer Phil Spector’s famous “Wall of Sound” voices, fought back tears during her acceptance speech. She was inducted by Bette Midler, who recalled first hearing Love’s voice on a transistor radio.

“Listening to her songs, you had to dance, you had to move, you had to keep looking for that rebel boy,” Midler said.
Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman, pianist/songwriter Leon Russell and Specialty Records founder Art Rupe also were ushered into the Rock Hall.
The ceremony was aired on Sunday 20th March 2011 on Fuse at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Why are Nervecell in the desert?

It’s 8pm somewhere near Al Ain and I’m peering at a printout taken from Google
Earth of the surrounding area. A hand-scrawled arrow labelled “Nervecell Video
Shoot” points to a random patch of sand off an unnamed road. The biggest metal band
to come out of the UAE are filming their latest video and I’ve been invited to watch
the proceedings. Unfortunately, the only way to get to this particular patch of sand is via a turn-off opposite Jebel Hafeet, a turn-off which I’ve been warmly assured is
“very difficult to spot, especially in the dark”. Squinting into the night, I pull into the
first path I see (missing it would mean having to return to the next roundabout some
20 minutes away and I’m already late). Nothingness. Zero. No sign of video
equipment, lights or a three-piece death metal outfit.

Out of the oblivion, another motor comes spluttering through the dust. The inside
lights are on and the two occupants stare at a map that looks suspiciously like the
same Google Earth printout. We look at each other in mutual confusion. Eventually,
the windows come down. “Nervecell video shoot?”

Amon Amarth speak!

Well it is that time once again when the long ships of the Viking – Death – metal Kings, [Amon Amarth] have set sail to crash the UK and North American shores, for highly anticipated tours. Their newest offering ‘Surtur Rising’ is with out a doubt at or above par with the quality of the crushing Viking inspired death metal we have come to know, love and expect from these Swedish metal masters.

I received a call from Johan .S the other day to chat a bit about the new album and upcoming tours…

Over the years, Johan .S and Olavi .M have become renowned for their ability to fuse such beautiful melodies with truly brutal music. With this in mind, I asked Johan what his writing credits consisted of on ‘Surtur Rising’. ‘We don’t believe in giving credit to individual band members. They are the bands songs so the whole band receives the credit. It doesn’t matter who did what.’. I thought to myself, maybe this has some merit regarding the bands longevity.

Amon Amarth worked with producer Jens Bogren on 2008’s epic album ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’, where he [Bogren] was able to convince the band to step out of their comfort zone, which met with astounding results. Why fix something that isn’t broken…right?

‘Yeah…but we were thinking about working with a different producer because we were interested in a new sound and again wanted to challenge ourselves not to resort to what we know and are familiar with. We [Amon Amarth] had a meeting with Jens where he assured us that it would not be a clone of the last album. It was cool that we got to record at numerous different studios at many diverse locations. The drums were recorded in Stockholm for instance. I do love working with Jens. It makes it a smoother process when you get to know someone and forge a friendship…makes it much easier I think.’.

When I first spun ‘Surtur Rising’ and heard ‘For Victory or Death’, it was like déjà vu. Remember when Iron Maiden’s ‘Seventh Son’ first came out?[or the first time you heard it] I don’t know about you, but me and my mates were almost reduced to tears when we heard keyboards on this album. Low and behold, what I thought would be the bane of Maiden, instead became one of their most beloved albums and still my favorite if I have to chose. Needless to say after a few listens, I came to terms with the fact that I may still be the same idiot I was when I was 15, but could not resist asking Johan ‘What’s up with the keyboard intro on ‘For Victory or Death?’

‘I think it was Jens idea…but it’s a guitar run through a chorus pedal, or something like that.’ I mention how different it is for AA. ‘Yes, and another thing we have never done until now is use acoustic guitars.’

So now all doubt has been removed, I am still the same idiot I was when I was 15… there is much to be said for maintaining an open mind.

It appears that more and more metal bands are including bonus tracks on albums. Some will say that it’s to help procure record sales, but for some it’s more an opportunity to pay homage to bands and songs that made a significant impact on the music they make and lives in general.

The ‘deluxe’ version of ‘Surtur Rising’ has the bonus tracks: ‘War Machine’[KISS] and ‘Balls to the Wall’[Accept], with the itunes version adding ‘Aerials’[System of a Down]. Who chose these songs?

‘I chose the ‘Balls to the Wall’ cover. ‘Aerials’ is a song that we [Amon Amarth] like to sing on the tour bus when we drink, also when we were in Japan, the whole band went up and sang it for Karaoke. It’s such a fun song, that’s why we chose it.’ I asked if there was any footage available. [Laughs] ‘Yeah, I actually have some really good footage of it on my laptop. I’ll show you when I see you on tour. We put all of our efforts into our new songs first. We knew we had to do three bonus tracks, but to be honest not much planning went into it.’

As of yet, only the US is slated to witness the band perform ‘Surtur Rising’ in it’s entirety. By Odin’s beard, there must be plans to do the same throughout the rest of the world?!?

‘No solid plans yet…following the US tour we have our European tour which we will have support acts. We will play some songs off the new album but not the whole thing. If it feels great in America, we’ll do it again. ‘

Amon Amarth will be pillaging Norwich April 1st. What can UK fans expect in contrast? ‘Children of Bodom’ are headlining and we are support. Our set will be forty-five minutes and we’ll include some songs off the new album, but it will be a totally different set.’

Before you hack off your battle-beards, burn your long ships, and toss all battle garb into the ocean in haste…remember: the US has NEVER seen a true ‘Full’ Amon Amarth spectacle with long ships on stage along with fire-breathing dragons and of course full on battle re-enactments in tow.

the weapon of choice

I was just surfing through the Internet and low and behold i spotted the most mighty of axes built like a gift for beelzebub or some sort warcraft made flesh weaponry.

It was amazing it felt like discovering the wheel and then finding a mcdonalds drive-through in the desert, truly a miracle to behold.

It was then when I realised what life was about. All that laid before this point in time had been immaterial. My life had now become a mission.

The task was to reveal the where-abouts of this most mighty of weapons.

Confidimus casse

In the beginning there was The Polka Tulk Blues.
A short introduction to the forefathers of heavy metal.

Deities of Iron

Osbourne: We started off playing jazz and blues. Cream, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the Beatles and Jethro Tull were our influences. At one point, we had a bottleneck-guitar player and a saxophone player.

Iommi: That lasted about five fucking minutes.

Osbourne: We used to rehearse across from this movie theater [in Birmingham] that would play hokey horror films. One day, Tony comes in and says, “People pay money to get scared — why don’t we start writing scary music?” Then we wrote a song called “Black Sabbath.” We told our friend Alvin Lee from Ten Years After that we’d changed our name to Black Sabbath, and he says, “You won’t go very far called that.”

Iommi: Being mean and frightening just came naturally. When Ozzy sang, we made that sort of sound.

Osbourne: We recorded the first album on our way to catch a ferry. The manager goes, “Just stop off for the day and record them fuckin’ songs you’ve been playing.” It was fucking primitive: Two four-track machines in a studio smaller than this room! Twelve hours later, we were finished. It was like, “Wow, I thought recording records would be a lot harder.”

Iommi: Within the band we had our own little communication, and people would read into it.

Osbourne: Everybody thinks “N.I.B.” stands for Nativity in Black, but it’s actually named after [drummer Bill Ward's] pointy beard. I was stoned, and I said to Bill, “You look like a fucking pen nib!” However, just recently I worked with an arranger who told me about the “devil’s interval” — it’s a musical term for a tonality that at one point in history, like, in seventeenth-century-fucking-something, was banned for being evil. It turns out a lot of Sabbath’s music is in the devil’s interval! We had no idea!

This is “Ozzy” Osbourne (Singer) and “Tony” Iommi (guitarist) of Black Sabbath talking about making their first album and metal’s first attack.
It’s amazing how “metal” this album was straight from the off. The title track Black Sabbath with it’s ominous rain and evil riffs defines what metal was soon to become.

To think that such a constant of rock history could be quite randomly and perhaps by fluke, created by a bunch of average 20 something “hippies” blokes, so-called good-for-nothings and not by some extensively trained music school bumpkins or overpaid fat cats, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. This just goes to show what you can do if you only try and are willing to work your fucking arse off.

These blokes obviously stumbled upon something that would go onto change the face and body of rock music, but just as easily may have not been, had Iommi’s old mates not introduced him to the music of another guitarist (Jean-Baptiste “Django” Reinhardt)
Django had the also has the misfortune losing his finger-tips in an accident, seeing how Reinhardt had triumphed over his loss inspired Iommi to carrying on playing (luckily for me otherwise I’d have shit all to do now, other than watching strictly come dancing).

It’s hard to imagine how different the world of music would be without Black Sabbath.
Just think there wouldn’t of been any “doom metal”, and definitely wouldn‘t have been a NOLA metal scene (Pantera, Down, Crowbar).

Back then no one would’ve thought that Black Sabbath out all the bands around at that time would prove to be such a great catalyst for change. Even-less that they would have such a ‘religious’ following.

‘Who’d of thunk’ a bunch guys from Birmingham (of all places) would be able to take on this great feat. Yes Cream, were the first hard rock band but then other bands such as Black Sabbath, Mountain, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Led Zeppelin took rock into more virtuous and Progressive territories.
